You Don’t Have to See the Whole Road

Reflection

One thing I have learned about following Jesus is that I like to know where I’m going.

I want the plan.

I want to know what happens next.

If I am making a decision, I want to know whether it is going to work before I make it. If God is leading me somewhere, part of me would love for Him to explain the entire journey before I take the first step.

But that usually isn’t how God works.

Proverbs tells us to trust in the Lord with all our heart and not lean on our own understanding.

That sounds simple until God leads us somewhere we don’t understand.

Sometimes we pray for direction and expect God to give us a map. Instead, He gives us enough light for the next step.

And then we have a decision to make.

Will I trust Him?

There have been plenty of times in my life when I could not see how everything was going to work out. There have been changes I didn’t plan for, responsibilities I wasn’t sure I was ready for, doors that opened unexpectedly, and other doors I probably would have preferred to remain open.

Looking back, I can see something that wasn’t always obvious while I was going through it:

God was already ahead of me.

That doesn’t mean every situation turned out exactly the way I wanted. Trusting God is not believing He will always follow my plan.

It is believing He is trustworthy when He doesn’t.

That distinction matters.

Sometimes we say we are trusting God when what we really mean is that we are trusting Him to produce the outcome we want.

Real trust says, “God, I have told You what I want, but I trust You enough to let You lead.”

That’s harder.

It requires surrender.

It also means admitting that my understanding is limited. I can only see what is happening right now. God sees what I cannot see.

He sees the people I haven’t met yet.

He sees opportunities that haven’t appeared yet.

He sees problems I don’t know are coming.

He sees how today’s decision connects with something years down the road.

I don’t.

And maybe I’m not supposed to.

Following Jesus is a daily decision, and sometimes that decision is simply choosing to take the next faithful step without knowing where the entire road leads.

Pray.

Listen.

Search Scripture.

Seek wise counsel when you need it.

Then, when God gives you enough direction to move, move.

You don’t have to understand everything before you obey.

You don’t have to have every question answered before you trust.

And you don’t have to see the whole road when you know the One who is leading you.

Today, God may not show you everything that’s coming.

But He will be there when you get there.

Pause and Consider

• What situation are you trying to completely understand before you are willing to trust God?
• Have you confused trusting God with expecting God to give you the outcome you want?
• What is the next faithful step you already know you need to take?

Live It Today

• Write down one situation where you are struggling with uncertainty.
• Pray about what you want, but finish your prayer by sincerely telling God, “I trust You with the outcome.”
• Instead of trying to solve everything today, identify the next faithful step you can take.
• Before the day ends, remember one situation from your past where you can now see that God was working even though you could not see it at the time.
