This path is designed to help you understand the gospel, Scripture, prayer, spiritual growth, church, baptism and Communion, temptation, witness, and lifelong discipleship. You are not expected to know everything or pretend that you have no questions.

I understand this is a discipleship relationship, not counseling, medical care, legal advice, or emergency support. I may ask honest questions and say when I do not understand or disagree. I will communicate when I need to reschedule or when the pace is not working. I may contact the coordinator if I have concerns about the mentoring relationship. I understand confidentiality has limits when someone may be in danger, abuse must be reported, or law requires action. I am encouraged to read the learner lesson, Scripture passages, and complete practical next steps between meetings. I understand the mentor is not meant to become my only Christian relationship or support. I may request a different mentor or pause the process without being shamed.

First Meeting Conversation Guide

The first meeting establishes trust and expectations. It does not need to complete Session 1.

Share basic stories and what brought each person to the relationship. Discuss the learner’s hopes, questions, and previous church experiences. Agree on frequency, meeting length, location, and communication method. Explain confidentiality and its safety or legal limits. Review mentor and learner expectations. Discuss what to do after a missed meeting or when the pace needs to change. Explain how to contact the coordinator or request a different match. Choose the date for Session 1.

Immediate danger comes before completing a lesson.

When someone may be in immediate danger, contact appropriate emergency services or qualified local help. Follow the church’s safeguarding policy and applicable law. Do not attempt to investigate abuse or handle a crisis beyond your training.

Explain confidentiality honestly

Do not promise absolute secrecy.
Share private information only with those who need it for responsible care, safety, supervision, or required reporting.
Tell the learner when information must be shared, unless doing so would increase immediate danger or violate professional guidance.
Keep records secure and factual. Avoid unnecessary sensitive detail.

Refer or escalate when needs exceed mentoring
